The Grand Canyon
When the Kinkade family set out to discover the American Southwest, we did it in style - in an oversized RV equipped to be a rolling art studio. We camped (quite comfortably, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit!) throughout the region, hiking and exploring some of God's grandest scenery. As a painter, I was struck by quality of light in the Southwest, the stunning clarity of the desert air. It has long been my ambition to paint the Grand Canyon, truly a place where mortal man stands on the edge of eternity. The basalt rock that borders the Colorado River dates to the very dawn of time. I found it almost impossible to convey the extraordinary depth of the canyon. I created depth through the drama of the foreground cliffs, accentuated by repeating forms in the distance. The ever-changing moods of the canyon surprised me, as clouds swept over the canyon. The sun alternately brings formations into sharp focus, and then casts them into shade. As I painted, a burst of sunlight struck the foreground cliff; I worked hurriedly to render the dramatic effect. My "Grand Canyon" captures a fleeting moment in eternity, one of the many expressions that passes over this sculpture from the hand of God. -Thomas Kinkade
