Wolf-Walk
Jay J. Johnson's style is unique. His use of color, light and texture all come together to create his personal vision of wildlife. Due to the way he prepares the base, the light remains alive on both the animals and the surface of the painting. Johnson uses ceiling plaster on masonite, then textures this with a palette knife. After it dries he will often glue on pebbles or gravel to simulate the ground at the animals feet. Onto this surface he paints the image in thin layers of acrylic paints, starting with opaque then moving to translucent. When dry, the painting is finished with a high gloss varnish. The result gives the art an animated appearance as the reflections shift and change as the viewer's eye moves.
